What you need to understand.

The real format of the exam, and what actually decides it.

The brevet is taken at the end of 3e (the final year of middle school), in five papers: French, mathematics, history-geography and moral and civic education (EMC), science, then a defence oral. The four written papers and the oral account for 60% of the final mark, continuous assessment for 40%. Since the 2026 session, the 800-point scale has disappeared: the diploma is decided on an average of 10 out of 20.

What decides is language and the calendar. Each paper reserves at least 2 points for spelling, syntax, vocabulary and organisation of the argument; a faulty script cannot reach the average in the writing-based papers. The 40% of continuous assessment is played out over the year, and the two sciences are announced only two months before the paper.

Five papers, ten coefficients (school candidate)

The format and weight of each paper, without the noise around it.

French

3 h: literary text 1 h 10 and dictation 20 min (60 points), then writing 1 h 30 (40 points) · Coefficient 2

Precise reading and structured writing; dictionary allowed for the writing part only.

Mathematics

2 h on two scripts: automatic skills 20 min without calculator (6 points), then reasoning 1 h 40 (14 points) · Coefficient 2

Quick and exact answers in part 1, justified reasoning in part 2; 2 points for language.

History-geography and EMC

2 h, two sub-papers without a break: history-geography out of 40 points, EMC out of 20 · Coefficient 1.5 and 0.5

A structured piece of at least 30 lines (20 in the vocational series) and fully written answers.

Sciences

1 h, two of three disciplines (physics-chemistry, life and earth sciences, technology), 10 points each · Coefficient 2

Use data and explain a method; 1 language point per discipline.

Defence oral

15 min: 5 min presentation and 10 min interview; 25 min for a group presentation of 3 candidates maximum · Coefficient 2

12 points for command of the subject, 8 for oral expression. Only school candidates take it.

Modern language (individual candidates)

1 h 30: comprehension of a 200-word text, then written expression of 50 to 80 words · Coefficient 2, instead of the oral

Understand an everyday text and write a short text in the language chosen at registration.

What actually blocks you.

The obstacles that cost you points, not the clichés.

Language can block the average

Since the 2027 session, each paper reserves at least 2 points for spelling, syntax, vocabulary and organisation of the argument. In highly written papers, a script that fails on these four points cannot reach the average.

Believing continuous assessment is in the bag

The 40% comes from the annual averages of all 3e subjects, at the same coefficient. They are set before the written papers: a weak term cannot be made up in June, whatever the subject.

Choosing your oral project in spring

The subject or project is sent to the head of school, who sets the date between 15 April and the last written paper, 28 June 2027. Choosing late means missing out on 2 coefficients.

Skipping one science

The paper covers two of the three disciplines, chosen at each session and announced two months before. For 2027, that choice was not published as of 28 October 2026: impossible to skip before spring.

The method, in 3 steps.

A course goes in. Ready-made materials come out. You study.

  1. 01

    Dictate, correct, dictate again

Twenty minutes of dictation a day, then rewriting the same sentences. Language is worth at least 2 points per paper.

  2. 02

    Twenty minutes without a calculator

Time the first part of maths: 6 points in 20 minutes. Tables, fractions, percentages, orders of magnitude.

  3. 03

    Five timed minutes of oral

Present your project for five minutes, then ten minutes of questions. The jury awards 12 points for the subject, 8 for expression.

What Summry does for this exam.

Study materials, not a promise you’ll pass.

Sheets for history-geography and EMC

Import your courses (PDF, photos, Word): sheets per chapter to prepare the 30-line structured piece and the written answers.

Quizzes for maths automatic skills

The first part of maths, 6 points in 20 minutes without a calculator, is worked on in short series. Generate quizzes from your course and redo them until they are automatic.

A chat that stays inside your documents

For language, each paper reserves at least 2 points: the chat answers only from your files, to find a rule quoted in your French course without leaving the document.

A sheet for the ten-minute interview

Import the text of your project or the audio of your presentation: you get a sheet to hold the five minutes of presentation and answer during the interview.

Summry does not mark your dictation or your script, does not choose your oral project and does not replace the written exercises: language and the structured piece are learned by writing by hand.

Frequently asked questions.

The questions we get asked most often about Brevet (DNB, national middle-school diploma).

Is the brevet compulsory to enter high school in 2027?

No. The ministry writes it on its page updated on 8 October 2026: the brevet does not condition access to a higher class at the end of 3e. It validates end-of-middle-school skills, it does not select candidates. No official source consulted announces a change for the 2027 session.

How many points are needed to obtain the brevet?

There is no longer an 800-point scale since the 2026 session. The diploma is obtained with an average of 10 out of 20: 40% from 3e annual averages, 60% from terminal papers, each marked out of 20. Mentions start at 12 (fairly good), 14 (good), 16 (very good) and 18 (very good with the jury's congratulations).

What are the dates of the 2027 session?

In mainland France, the written papers fall on Thursday 24, Friday 25 and Monday 28 June 2027: French on 24, history-geography and EMC on 25, sciences then mathematics on 28. The modern language for individual candidates takes place on 29 June, the replacement session on 9 and 10 September. The oral is set by your school between 15 April and the last written paper, 28 June.

What does the strengthening of language change in 2027?

Each paper awards at least 2 points for spelling, syntax, vocabulary and organisation of reasoning; some give more. In writing-based papers, a script that fails on these four aspects cannot reach the average. The note of 11 September 2026 excludes multiple-choice questions from the reasoning part in mathematics and requires written answers, or short but written, elsewhere.

Can you take the brevet without being at middle school?

Yes, as an individual candidate: registration is done online on the website of your academy of residence. You take five written papers and no oral, the four common papers plus a modern language, coefficient 2 each. The diploma is then awarded on the marks of these written papers alone, without continuous assessment.
