Summry or ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant: it explains a course, asks questions, summarises a PDF. Summry is our tool, and it does one precise thing: turning a course into a study sheet, flashcards and exportable quizzes. If you are looking to understand, ChatGPT is often enough. If you are looking to produce study material at scale, the question changes.

Two tools, two approaches.

ChatGPT starts from the conversation. You open a chat, attach a file, ask. Study mode makes you revise through questions, flashcards are saved in a library, deep research cites its sources. It is flexible, and it works for almost everything. But the output stays inside ChatGPT: no documented Anki export, no PDF export of a study sheet.

Summry starts from the course. A photo of your notes, a PDF, an audio file: in about twenty seconds, sometimes less, you have a study sheet, flashcards and quizzes. The chat answers only from your documents. You export Anki-compatible CSV, you print to PDF. It is our tool, we say so. And ChatGPT does several things better than we do — they are listed below.

Summry is our tool. We compare it with its limits, and we also say what ChatGPT does better.

What ChatGPT does well.

What really works in ChatGPT, and when it helps.

  • Study mode

ChatGPT questions you instead of giving the answer. It explains in layers, checks understanding with quizzes and open questions, tracks progress. Enabled with @study, on all plans.

  • Flashcards already built in

Two-sided cards are generated from a topic or imported notes. Flipping, shuffling, marking “I know / to review”. Decks are saved in a library.

  • A wide import, audio included

PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV, images, photos of notes. Audio is accepted, but only on paid plans.

  • A free plan that really helps

The Free tier gives unlimited text chats, web search, file and image uploads. Tools are limited and audio stays paid, but you can work without paying.

  • An ecosystem everywhere

Web, iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Chrome extension. History synchronises. Few study tools do that.

  • Deep research

A multi-step search on the web, with cited sources and a structured report. Handy to frame a topic before making study sheets.

What Summry adds.

The differences that matter when the study load grows.

  • The study sheet, not the conversation

ChatGPT produces a study guide inside the conversation. Summry outputs a laid-out study sheet, made to be reread and printed to PDF. The difference is not the text: it is what you can do with it.

  • An Anki and paper loop

Summry exports flashcards as Anki-compatible CSV and prints study sheets to PDF. On ChatGPT’s side, no Anki export is documented; the official export delivers a ZIP archive of the account, with up to seven days’ delay.

  • A chat bounded to your courses

With Summry, the chat answers only from your documents. With ChatGPT, it can also rely on account memory and on the web. For a study sheet or a quiz, that closure changes the result.

  • Mind maps

Summry also generates mind maps, next to study sheets and flashcards. At ChatGPT, no mind-map feature is documented: you can ask for a diagram, not edit a map.

  • A price that holds over twelve months

Free with 50 credits a month, then €7/month, or €5.83/month billed yearly (€70/year); Major €15/month, or €10/month billed yearly (€120/year). ChatGPT Plus: €23/month, i.e. €276 over twelve months, with no yearly plan for individuals.

  • A PWA, no installation

Summry is added to your home screen from your browser. No store, no update to launch. ChatGPT has native applications: on that point, it does better.

The study load, in medicine and beyond

In the PASS or the LAS, the problem is not understanding. It is the volume. Courses pile up faster than you can get them into clean shape: handouts, handwritten notes, recorded lectures. You have to understand once, make study sheets, then revise up to the exams.

ChatGPT holds the explanation side. Going back over a mechanism, being quizzed on a chapter, turning notes into questions: study mode is good at that. What jams is the output. No documented Anki export, no PDF export of a study sheet, no mind-map feature. Over a semester, you copy by hand what the chat produces, and the load comes back there. The same calculation holds in law — definitions, case law, plans — and in preparatory classes, where formulas and authors are revised through repetition.

Summry takes over on production. Photo of your notes, PDF of the handout, audio of the course: a study sheet in about twenty seconds, its flashcards, its quizzes. You export into Anki, you print to reread, you question your documents in the evening. The method matters as much as the tool: [our guide to revising for the PASS](/pour/pass-medecine) details the schedule.

The head-to-head.

Nine criteria, the same for every tool. A “—” means “not verified”, not “no”.

When to choose which?

Two different uses. See which one looks like yours.

Choose ChatGPT

Choose ChatGPT if you want an assistant that can do everything: explain a concept at 11 pm, transcribe a course, look for sources, quiz you on a chapter. It is already on your phone, and its free tier is enough to test.

Choose Summry

Choose Summry if your problem is repetition: medicine, PASS, LAS, preparatory classes, law. Your courses are long, sometimes handwritten, and you want printable study sheets, mind maps and flashcards in Anki.

Summry is free with 50 credits a month; the number of courses depends on their size. Then: Essentiel €7/month, or €5.83/month billed yearly (€70/year); Major €15/month, or €10/month billed yearly (€120/year).

ChatGPT is free on Free, with limits on files, images, audio and deep research. Go at €8/month, Plus at €23/month, Pro from €103/month. No yearly plan for individuals: Plus comes to €276 over twelve months, against €70/year for Summry Essentiel.

Prices checked on 10/28/2026 on the French pricing page. The gap between the US price ($20) and the French price (€23) is not explained by OpenAI: tax is likely, it is not stated. The Back to School student offer — four months of Plus free — is reserved for US institutions and expires on October 31, 2026: in France, no discount is displayed.

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to the most common questions about ChatGPT and Summry.

Summry or ChatGPT: which one should you choose to study?

Both, often. ChatGPT to understand, transcribe a course, look for a source. Summry to produce study sheets, flashcards and quizzes you can export. If you have to decide: in medicine, law and preparatory classes, the bottleneck is not understanding, it is producing the material.

Is ChatGPT free?

Yes. The Free tier gives unlimited text chats, but limits messages with files, images and voice, as well as deep research. Audio uploads are reserved for paid plans. Ads may appear in some countries.

Does ChatGPT export to Anki?

Not in a documented way. The official export produces a ZIP archive of the account, with a delay of up to seven days. No .apkg deck is advertised. Summry offers Anki-compatible CSV.

Is ChatGPT suitable for the PASS and the LAS?

Partly. It explains and quizzes well, and study mode is available on all plans. However, no PDF export of a study sheet and no mind-map feature are documented, and nothing indicates alignment with French curricula. Over a dense semester, the logistics slow you down.

Does Summry install like an application?

Yes, as a PWA: you add it to your home screen from your browser. No store. ChatGPT has native applications on iOS, Android, macOS and Windows.
